Last night Christian walked into SmackDown! World Heavyweight Champion, but unfortunately he walked a broken man.
The show kicked off as you would have expected. Christian came out to cut a promo about his recent win to the packed out crowd full of Peeps, to be interrupted by potential #1 Contenders. First in that line was Mark Henry, he was sporting a new black Ring Attire to go with his new Heel attitude. To be honest I think I prefer Henry as a Heel than a Face, gives him more to work with.
Soon after Henry had made his claim, The Great Khali made his way to the ring to make his claim to the belt. Next came the Viper, Randy Orton, he made his claim and the crowd was going nuts for what could be a great match. Teddy Long then came out to make the decision. By this point you may have noticed that we are following your typical opening promo for new Champion with no #1 Contender. Teddy decided to turn to the crowd for the choice and of cores the crowd cheered most for Randy. So there it is Christian vs. Randy Orton for the World Title at Over The Limit…. Actually no, Teddy announces that the match will be taking place that night. Now that is out of the ordinary for WWE, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Jump forward to the last half hour of the show and the Title match is underway, and it was one hell of a match. Christian and Randy put on a great back and forth contest filing that last half hour with a great on edge performance. Now usually when a World Title is defended on Raw or SmackDown! The champion will always somehow keep his belt unless there is a big reason for the title change, for example the champion is planning on leaving or is suffering from an injury. So when Randy caught Christian in an RKO, rolled him up for the 3 count and won the World Title the WWE Universe was in shock. Christian was left in the ring on his knees; he then slowly left to the applause of the crowd.
Everyone will have mixed opinions on this, Christians Peeps will of cores be pretty P.O’d but what better way to get you interested and your attention? I see this as a great twist; no one would have thought that Christian would lose the Belt on his first defence, epically on SmackDown! And it’s a brilliant set up for future storylines, not to mention being unpredictable and differing from normal routine. I foresee Christian vs. Rand Orton at Over The Limit, but I am not sure if Christian will be getting his belt back that soon, if at all. On the other side of my opinion, I do not like the fact that Christians first Title reign in his 13 year Career, which has wanted for 17 years, came to close after holding the Title for about 2 days. (In TV land its 5 days, but SmackDown! Is recorded on Tuesday nights.) He is a much loved Superstar, with a huge fan base and is a brilliant in ring performer, so why take the Title away from him so soon? There may be some under lying reasons that we are waiting to come to the surface but for now it just seemed unneeded.
This sort of thing will always be a good way of gabbing peoples attention, a good way of mixing it up and not being so predictable and linier.
So was this change a bad thing? For Christian fans, yes, they didn’t want to see this happen so soon. But on the other side of things it has got me interested and will have fans watching intently to see what’s to happen next.
Now let’s have a quick look at the rest of the show because it wasn’t a bad one. We were treated to a great match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan.
Sin Cara took on Tyson Kidd with Chavo at ringside, after the match Chavo came in the ring and shook hands with Cara prepping them for a few matches in the future and gives Chavo a push.
Something that does bug me about Sin Cara though is that everyone praises him for his moves and ability, and yes this is praise he rightly deserves, but a lot of those high flying luchador moves involve help from the opponent, if they didn’t put in there part a lot of the moves would just be a mess. So well done to Sin Cara but also well done to Kidd for being able to make them moves look as good as they did.
The Corre had Ezekiel Jackson take on the Big Show, Zeke was able to show his strengths being able to slam Show to the mat twice. After a little interference from the rest of The Corre, Zeke was able to pick up the win. Once all was said and done though Zeke turned his back on his team members and left.
Later back stage The Corre came to chat with Zeke. Zeke then turned on the Corre hitting Wade. Zeke put up a fight but the Corre was able to get the better of him. Gabriel, Heath and Wade were not pulling punches either, they wailed on Zeke as if they really wanted to hurt him. There was folding chair to one side which ended up being thrown at Zeke and looked to hit him in the head, and this wasn’t one of the slim Steel Chairs they use usually, this was a proper chair, it was heavier than normal and has a padded seat, not something you would want to have thrown at you. A suit case was then dumped on Zeke before they pulled some big thing over had it fall on Zeke, this was combined with some bad sound effects of a crashing as it fell, when it was obviously just made out of plastic and was prop epically placed there. A good and bad promo, good because WWE are being a bit rougher in there back stage fights and Hardcore natured bouts, but bad because the sound effect and the prop use was terrible.
We also had Layla beat Alicia Fox in a very quick match, it was only put together for the use of Kharma. She came to the ring after the match and Layla left as quickly as she could. Alicia decides to attack Kharma but it didn’t work out well as she got slammed to the mat in the same fashion as McCool at Extreme Rules, and Maryse on Raw.
Overall I thought this was a good show and it got my attention so I am looking forward to what’s to come.
Questions for you.
What are your thoughts on Christian’s loss of the World Title so soon?
What do you think is next for the Corre?
What use is there for Kharma other than beating on all the Divas? She seems to be pretty unstoppable so what are they going to do to try and bring her to a halt?
Well that’s all for now so this is Matty.D signing off.
