SummerSlam Shines!

Last night’s SummerSlam event was the best WWE PPV of the year! It had everything you could ask for, great action and promos, an amazing set of matches, a controversial moment, the return of a star and a screwing of a Champ.

The night kicked off with a 6-Man tag match. John Morrison, Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston took on Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth and the Miz in a great opening contest which saw Rey pick up the 3 count.

This lead into a much better than usual Big Man match between the now Face Sheamus, who the crowd just loves, and the Angry Black Man Mark Henry.
The match was won by Mark as he slammed Sheamus through the barricade in great Pro Wrestling fashion, Mark was able to crawl his way back into the ring for the Ref to count out Sheamus.

We then moved into a stellar performance from Cee Lo Green as he performed both the SummerSlam theme song “Bright Lights, Bigger City.” And “Forget you.”
Music performances usually get a bad rep and Wrestling shows but Cee Lo bought it hard and performed brilliantly. Also they didn’t take up too much time it was perfectly placed.

After Cee Lo had left our screens we moved it another surprisingly good match between Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix. For a WWE Divas match this was actually a great performance from both Kelly and Beth. My support was on Beth (obviously), but Kelly ended up picking up the win by reversing the Glam Slam into a pin. I don’t see this being the end of this rivalry, expect to see more from Beth, Natalya, Eve and Kelly and let’s hope for more improvement in the Divas division.

We then had an appearance by Jimmy Heart back stage as he talks with R-Truth about conspiracy in a great promo.

This lead into NXT Season 1 stars Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett. Yet another brilliant match, Bryan and Wade didn’t pull any punches as the match looked as real as could possibly get, fists were flying and so were knees and feet, I’m amazed that someone didn’t lose a tooth.
Wade Barrett picked up the win but you can’t deny the fact that both of these guys are the future of Wrestling.

We then moved into main event number one, Christian vs. Orton. Before the match even started Christian bought out his “insurance policy”, a man he was going to have in his corner to help him retain his World Title, that man was Edge.
Edges music played, and the crowd blew the roof as Edge made his way to the ring. Edge wasn’t around for long though as he basically called Christian, “A whiney little Bitch” before leaving Christian to fend for himself.

Randy then emerged and we headed into my favourite match of the night. It was a no DQ match the way it should be. They fought in the ring, they fought out of the ring, and they fought in the crowd. What else did we see in the match? Kendo sticks, Tables, Trash Cans, Steel Chairs and Steel Steps not to mention that neither of them were pulling there punches. For a PG rated show this match pushed that limit as far as it could. The match was spectacular and entertaining but was rather dangerous as at a couple of times during the match it had looked that Randy may have been injured, regardless though the man pushed on through. I felt I was watching the attitude era again, just with a lot less blood and like I’ve said before Blood isn’t needed to make a match like this great.
Randy picked up the win by catching Christian as he comes off the turnbuckle into an RKO on the Steel Steps that were lying in the ring. Randy looked to have hit his head hard on the steps in the process but he got the 3 count that regained him the World Heavyweight Championship. I loved this match so much that I’m actually watching it again as I write this.

Now before I talk about main event number 2 I just want to let you know that Triple H’s wife Stephanie McMahon was back stage and throughout the night it looked that Trips and Steph may have been conspiring to have Cena win. That didn’t really be the case though as the match went forward without a hitch, (kinder like I predicted.)
Triple H did a fine job as your everyday WWE referee. You know a Ref is doing a good job when you forget he is even there and that was the case with Triple H. That was at least until both Punk and Cena were lying outside the ring close to a double count out. Trips didn’t want things to end that way so he threw each one of them back in the ring and got the match to keep going. The match was another brilliant one and was at the same level as Punk vs Cena at MitB. The ending though had its controversy. The GTS was nailed on Cena and Punk took the pin, Triple H counted the 3 count and not seeing that Cena’s foot was on the bottom rope gave Punk the win. Something that even a normal ref has done before. Cena had a small protest with Triple H but left Punk to celebrate.
Triple H held up Punks hand in victory but Punk kept his eyes on Triple up until he left the ring. What happened next though just left us all in shock.
Quietly through the crowd came the big man Kevin Nash, he clotheslined Punk then nailed a Jack Knife power bomb leaving Punk in the middle of the ring. Triple H was at the top of the ramp and he looked on in awe, he then walked back down to confront Nash but he was already on his way back through the crowd.
In the background Del Rio appeared, a Ref by his side and MitB briefcase in hand, that’s right not only has Punk been nailed by Nash but gets screwed by Del Rio as he pins Punk after a swift kick in seconds taking the WWE Championship.
Triple H looked to of just lost control and didn’t know what was going on, Punk gets attacked by Nash then screwed by Del Rio and Trips is standing there trying to make sense of it all.

This ending has left us all with questions, and I’m sure we will be watching Raw tonight to try and find the answers.

The prediction amongst my friends is that Kevin Nash is working for Del Rio and that he is playing a body guard role. I think that could be interesting but I actually think I’d prefer to have Nash as new singles competitor but I guess only time will tell.

I give SummerSlam a full 5 out 5 stars!

SummerSlam Week!

It’s the final week before my favourite WWE PPV of the year, SummerSlam! That means BBQ, drink and fun all over this weekend so I am very much looking forward to it.

Now let’s have a quick look at the current matches on the Card for this Sunday.

World Heavyweight Champion Christian vs. Randy Orton
No Holds Barred!

That’s right these two are going head to head yet again. Usually when  a pair face each other this many times it becomes boring and repetitive, we have seen it before why do we want to see it again? Well in this particular case the reason to watch this match is the no holds barred rules that have been put in place. It will give the two of them more freedom to travel around the arena and do more than usual. Whether or not it will impress though is still to be seen. The lead up has been rather boring and bland, the same of what we have seen before.

WWE Champion CM Punk vs. WWE Champion John Cena
Special Guest Referee Triple H

I still think that CM Punk returned to early, and due to this a lot of people feel that the story has died out. I personally do not agree. The promos between Punk, Cena and Triple H have been brilliant and the way the story has developed has come across well.
Last night was the “official” contract signing for the match but I groaned as these Contract signings are all the same, boring and pretty pointless, Punk and Cena though turned it into an epic moment. Punk actually opened the Promo by telling us exactly what I was thinking in regards to on screen contract signings. Punk also spoke about the recent releases of Vladimir Kozlov, David Heart Smith and Chris Masters once again bringing real life into the story.
The whole promo was brilliant and did end in Cena and Punk kicking off, John Laurinaitis ended up getting hit by Punk by getting in the middle of the fray and Triple H got hit by Cena in his attempt to keep Punk at bay. The match has had a great build and should impress but my prediction is Triple H to screw over CM Punk in his apparent future Heel turn. Triple H being the Referee was announced last night which is the main reason for my prediction, I just hope that having Triple H in the middle doesn’t put a damper on the match.

Divas Champion Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix

Well what is there to say? This is a Divas match so I’m not usually interested, and with the release of Melina and Gail Kim quitting the Divas Division becomes even worse than before as those two were Divas that could actually perform. That leaves WWE with only two Divas that can perform, Beth and Natalya, and one Diva that does well but still needs work, that being Eve. There are some that do try there hardest, Divas like current champion Kelly Kelly, but I feel the rest of the Divas are a mess and are just there to look pretty. That being said there has been a recent change that could improve on all this. There has been a push on Beth and Nat who have both turned Heel, and the WWE have been pushing NXT Season 3 Divas A.J, but she does need a lot of work still, and Kaitlyn who looks amazing but still can’t perform in the ring just on the mic, and as of last week Aksana was shown to be joining the Divas with a new look, different from her time on NXT. With Beth and Nat turning Heel though we may see a revolution in the WWE Divas Division. I’m hoping that Beth and Nat start pushing for better competition on screen and pointing out the sort of thing that Michael Cole keeps saying that the WWE Divas are useless. With Beth and Nat leading the Divas I hope that the Divas start to learn how things work in a Wrestling ring. I’m backing Beth this Sunday.

Sheamus vs. Mark Henry

This match was rather unexpected. About 3 weeks ago we had Wade Barrett vs. Sheamus. Out of the two of them Sheamus was the one who received the most cheers. The next week Mark beat on a home town nobody and claimed that he had no competition, Teddy came to the ring and said that no one actually wanted to fight him. It was at that moment Seamus came out and said, “I’ll fight ya!” he got loads of cheers and Sheamus chants started to erupt through the arena changing this long time Heel into a Face. It was that moment that created this match. What we get though may be nothing more than a mess, but let’s not judge things too fast.

Prediction

What do I predict? Well I don’t usually like to predict, I tend to leave that up to you guys but I actually do have a prediction to the WWE Championship Match. I predict that the match will at first go off without a hitch; Triple H will do his thing as Ref until there will be some reason for him to get a bit more involved. He will in the end either in anger cost CM Punk or Cena the match or screw CM Punk in the Heel turn rumoured to happen soon. But all this is just a prediction, by no means could I be right.

The Rock

The Rock has been rumoured to be at the event but that is still only a rumour as he is also rumoured to be at Survivor Series in November.

Mick Foley

Mick Foley was spotted leaving a WWE event, I know that first thing that comes to mind is “is he coming back to WWE?” but apparently he was there purely as a fan with his kids.

Tag Teams

The Tag Team Division may be coming up but they still need more teams and a Storyline that makes the tag titles something to fight for. Currently we have Michael McGillcutty and David Otunga as the tag champs, the Nexus name has now been dropped completely and they are going simply by their names. They have their own music now and there in ring chemistry has improved. Their main rival team and possibly only rival team is the Uso’s, they have improved a lot over recent months, great in ring chemistry and an awesome and unique ring entrance that includes a “Haka”. All that’s left is to throw more teams in and start writing some storylines to get us interested.

Questions for you.

What match are you looking forward to?

Any Predictions?

What sort of changes would you like to see made to the Divas and Tag Division?

Don't forget to vote on the poll on the right and I will see you after SummerSlam.
